Saying how you feel without starting a fight

Describe your experience, not their character.

Most arguments start with a sentence about the other person. These versions say the same thing from your own side, which is usually the part you actually wanted heard.

Instead of · Try · Why it works

Instead of

You never listen to me.

Try

“I don't feel heard when I'm trying to explain something important.”

Why it works

“Never” is a claim about their character, so the conversation becomes about whether it's fair. Describing your experience keeps it about the moment.

Tone · Softer · Direct

Instead of

Whatever.

Try

“I don't think continuing this right now will help. Can we come back to it tonight?”

Why it works

“Whatever” ends the conversation without ending the argument. Naming the pause, and when you'll return, does both.

Tone · Professional · Warm

Instead of

You're being weird.

Try

“You seem quieter than usual. Is something bothering you?”

Why it works

Describing what you noticed, rather than labelling them, gives them an easy way to answer honestly.

Tone · Warm · Softer

Instead of

You always make everything about you.

Try

“I wanted to talk about my day, and we ended up back on work. Can we come back to it?”

Why it works

One specific moment is something you can resolve tonight. A character judgement is something you'll argue about instead.

Tone · Direct

Instead of

It's fine.

Try

“It's not fine, but I don't want to get into it right now.”

Why it works

“It's fine” asks the other person to guess. Both rewrites are honest and still protect the moment.

When it isn't.
