Quick answer
Between usually applies to two distinct items or people (or clear one-to-one relationships), while among applies to a group of three or more considered collectively.
The traditional rule, “between two, among three or more”, is a useful starting point, but it doesn’t capture the full picture. The real distinction is about whether you’re treating things individually and distinctly, or as one undifferentiated group.
Between: Meaning and Use
Between (bih-TWEEN) is a preposition used when items are considered individually, even if there are more than two, as long as the relationships are distinct and specific.
- The negotiation is between the union and management.
- There are strong trade ties between France, Germany, and Italy. (distinct bilateral relationships)
- Choose between the red and blue options.
Among: Meaning and Use
Among (uh-MUNG) is a preposition used when something is part of, surrounded by, or distributed within a group treated as a whole, rather than as separate individual relationships.
- The prize money was divided among the five winners.
- She felt at home among old friends.
- Among the candidates, only one had prior experience.
Which Word Should I Use?
Ask whether you’re describing a specific relationship between named, distinct parties (use between) or a general position within an undifferentiated group (use among). Number alone isn’t the deciding factor, “between the twelve member states” is correct when each state’s relationship to the others is distinct, such as in treaties.
| Between | Among | |
|---|---|---|
| Typical use | Two or more distinct items | Group of three or more, collectively |
| Focus | Individual relationships | General position within a group |
| Example | Between you and me | Among the crowd |
| Example (3+) | Trade between the three nations | Popular among teenagers |

Common Mistakes
- Assuming between can never be used for more than two things, it can, when relationships are distinct.
- Using among for a clear one-to-one exchange: “the secret is among you and me” should be “between you and me.”
- Writing “between each”, “between” already implies more than one, so “between each student” is often better phrased as “among the students” or “between students.”
- Mixing up “amongst,” an older British variant of among with the same meaning.
